other directions. In the spirit of Brindley (1970), we should first confirm the plausibility of these hypotheses by correlating properties of neural events with corresponding properties of perceptual phenomena. This is a straightforward task in the case of motion perception and aftereffects. Data from direct cell recordings show that the middle temporal area (MT ) in primates is particularly rich in motion-sensitive cells (see chapter 6). Human brain imaging studies show high activity in a corresponding region of cortexthe occipitotem~oral parietal junctionin the presence of M A Es (T ootell et al., 1995), and closed head injuries in the same area of cortex lead to impaired motion perception ( Vaina et al., 1990). It is also not difficult to And more specific evidence supporting the involvement of cortical cells in the MAE. For example, classic M A Es are confined to the area of retina exposed to the adapting stimulus, a property that can be related to the restricted receptive field of cortical cells; the perceptual phenomenon is also usually short-lived, in agreement with data on changes in neural

Simultaneous adaptation of retinal and extra-retinal motion signals

A number of models of motion perception include estimates of eye velocity to help compensate for the incidental retinal motion produced by smooth pursuit. The 'classical' model uses extra-retinal motor command signals to obtain the estimate. More recent 'reference-signal' models use retinal motion information to enhance the extra-retinal signal. The consequence of simultaneously adapting to pur...

Motion in depth from interocular velocity differences revealed by differential motion aftereffect

There are two possible binocular mechanisms for the detection of motion in depth. One is based on disparity changes over time and the other is based on interocular velocity differences. It has previously been shown that disparity changes over time can produce the perception of motion in depth. However, existing psychophysical and physiological data are inconclusive as to whether interocular vel...

Selective attention and cyclopean motion processing

The effect of diverted selective attention on the induction of the cyclopean motion aftereffect (aftereffect induced from dynamic disparity information) was investigated. The luminance motion aftereffect was examined for comparison. During diverted-attention trials, observers ignored background adapting motion and performed a low-load or high-load rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task pr...

Aftereffect of high-speed motion.

A visual illusion known as the motion aftereffect is considered to be the perceptual manifestation of motion sensors that are recovering from adaptation. This aftereffect can be obtained for a specific range of adaptation speeds with its magnitude generally peaking for speeds around 3 deg s-1. The classic motion aftereffect is usually measured with a static test pattern. Here, we measured the m...

Motion adaptation shifts apparent position without the motion aftereffect.

Adaptation to motion can produce effects on both the perceived motion (the motion aftereffect) and the position (McGraw, Whitaker, Skillen, & Chung, 2002; Nishida & Johnston, 1999; Snowden, 1998; Whitaker, McGraw, & Pearson, 1999) of a subsequently viewed test stimulus. The position shift can be interpreted as a consequence of the motion aftereffect. For example, as the motion within a stationa...

Stereodeficient subjects show substantial differences in interocular transfer of two motion adaptation aftereffects

Interocular transfer (IOT) of two motion aftereffects was examined in subjects with normal and deficient stereopsis. Normal subjects showed complete (100%) IOT of motion adaptation on coherent motion thresholds, but only partial IOT of a conventional motion aftereffect, supporting suggestions that the latter aftereffect may be mediated at a lower level in the visual pathway than the extrastriat...
